Rules for Student Etiquette

Etiquette 1: All practitioners will observe the tenets of TaeKwon-Do:
  • Courtesy--by demonstrating respect for everyone at all times, inside and outside of the dojang, irrespective of rank, position, or any other potentially discriminating factor.
  • Integrity--by demonstrating basic moral and ethical principles and refusing to make compromises to these principles in all domains of life.
  • Perseverance--by demonstrating best effort during all points of class and determination in pursuit of life goals.
  • Self-Control--by demonstrating the wisdom of thinking before acting and by considering the possible consequences of those actions before execution.  All practitioners are expected to act from conscious, conscientious deliberation of all available factors and in the best interest and for the good of all.
  • Indomitable Spirit--by expressing an optimistic and determined presence includes cheerfulness, honesty, loyalty, gratitude, and excellent physical and emotional condition in all circumstances (taking into consideration age and other relevant factors).
Etiquette 2:
All practitioners, irrespective of age, are expected to stand out among peers in terms of their pursuit of excellence in all endeavors while maintaining consideration for all involved.  This includes appropriate behavior and attire at all union events out of respect and recognition of each other, TaeKwon-Do and our practice (clean, official doboks while training, dress commensurate with occasion outside of training).

Etiquette 3:
All practitioners are expected to be supportive and encouraging to all union students and their respective schools and refrain from any practices that would in any way be competitive or undermining. It should be the goal of every practitioner of TaeKwon-do to assist any students with less experience than themselves.

Etiquette 4:
All practitioners are expected to show respect upon entering any TKDI dojang, and again upon stepping onto the mat. This can be done by saluting, bowing, or another method deemed appropriate by your teacher.

Etiquette 5:
Students must bow to Grandmaster Kim and other black belts in greeting.  Bowing has no religious connotations and is solely a gesture of respect.  This gesture of respect is an integral part of a student’s experience in Taekwon-Do. These black belts must be addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am".

Etiquette 6:
During class, students must conduct themselves in a manner befitting students of TaeKwon-do. This includes a respectful attitude, working hard, no slouching, no leaning, and never standing with their arms crossed or hands on hips. All practice must be done with sincerity, a student not trying their best is a waste of their time and a waste of their teacher's time.

Etiquette 7:
All practitioners are welcome and encouraged, but red belt practitioners and above are expected to attend the TKDI Annual Intensive Weekend (August) as often as possible.  All black belt practitioners are expected to attend a TKDI Black Belt Seminar annually if possible.

Etiquette 8:
All practitioners understand that breaches to the Articles of Conduct are subject to action from their teachers and/or the Disciplinary Committee.
